The definition
of reading English intensity
Reading
is to grasp language patterns from their written representation. In a second
language, reading is usually taught to students who are already literate in the
source language (Lado, 1983: 132). According to Dechant, reading is the
culminating act of the communicative process, initiated by the thoughts of the
writer and expressed through the signs or symbols on the printed page (1982:36).
From
the definitions above, the writer concludes that reading is an active process
of understanding meaning or message from the writer. It is a process of
understanding the information given in a text. It involves a group of mind
activity which is aimed to understand the information given through our sight.
English
is of England: of the kind or style prevalent in England (Webster’s Third New
International dictionary, 1981: 752). In this case, the writer researches about
language. So, English is a language from England that is an international
language usually is used by people around the world as union language.
According
to the Oxford dictionary, intensity is a state of being intense, strength of
feeling. In other words, intensity is how far doing something consistently.
From
the definitions above, the writer concludes that reading English intensity is
an active process of understanding meaning or message from the writer through English reading consistently.
The
following are suggestions that are stated by Crow and Crow (in Purwanto, 1994:
120) to achieve the learning outcomes more efficiently. There are some indicators
that can be applied to achieve intensity in reading English. They are:

Have a definite
learning objective in advance.
2)
Look for an
adequate place to learn.
3)
Maintain
physical condition not to disturb the concentration and mental activity.
4)
Plan and follow
a time to learn.
5)
Take an
interlude during learning.
6)
Look for topic
sentences or core meaning of each paragraph.
7)
During the
study using the method of repetition in the liver (silent Recitation).
8)
Perform overall
method (whole method) whenever possible.
9)
Try to read
quickly but carefully.
10)
Make notes or
summaries are arranged neatly.
11)
Do an
assessment of the difficulty of materials to be studied further.
12)
Prepare and
make the questions and try to find answers.
13)
Focus intently
on learning time.
14)
Study carefully
the tables, graphs, and other illustrative material.
15)
Get used to
create a summary and conclusions.
16)
Make sure to
complete the learning tasks.
17)
Learn the fine
proposed by the author's statement and defiant it if you doubt its truth.
18)
Examine the
opinion of some authors.
19)
Learn to use a
dictionary as well as possible.
20)
Analyze the
habit of learning to do, and try to fix remedy its weaknesses.
